About three miles north of downtown San Antonio, Beacon Hill is bordered by Interstate 10, West Hildebrand Avenue, Fredericksburg Road and San Pedro Road. It has been getting national attention as one of America's "hottest, most affordable neighborhoods." (Redfin.com)
The neighborhood began to grow in the 1850s and was one of San Antonio's original two platted subdivisions. Many of the current single family home properties date from the 1920s, but new construction has sprung up, too. Older single family architectural styles include bungalow and prairie. Newer styles include cottage, Craftsman and traditional. Condominiums and town homes, some with a Frank Lloyd Wright look, have come along in the last 10 years or so. A street may contain a hodgepod of historic homes and modern residences, giving the neighborhood somewhat of a organic yet trendy feel.
This is why many people, including empty nesters, boomers and retirees, enjoy living here. As one Realtor put it, Beacon Hill combines "old San Antonio charm with 21st century urban living."
The median home price is $218,000. Most newer properties are more expensive.
On top of the slightly funky architectural landscape, Beacon Hill is home to restaurants and shops. The neighborhood has a strong sense of community, too, with residents meeting once a month to discuss local issues. An annual Christmas party, National Night Out, a thriving community garden and more bring residents together throughout the year.
The neighborhood has some racial diversity, and politics lean to the left.
Summer temperatures are in the 80s and 90s, and winter temperatures are in the 40s and 50s. On average, the area receives 40 inches of rain per year.
