Cozy Byrnes Downs is a tidy neighborhood in West Ashley, one of Charleston's six distinct districts. Just five minutes from downtown Charleston, Byrnes Downs dates from the 1940s and 1950s and has about 1,000 homes.
Adorable, well-built brick cottages are the highlight here. Most have two to three bedrooms, one to two baths and between about 850 square feet and 1,800 square feet, making this area popular with families, young professionals, blue collar workers, students and retirees.
Lawns are small and well tended, while streets are quiet and tree lined. Many properties have been renovated over the years and boast an elegant interior. Custom shelving, stainless steel appliances, designer lighting and more are common. Only a few homes are for sale at any given time, and prices start in the low-$300,000s.
The Byrnes Downs Neighborhood Association's mission is "to promote, improve and maintain the residential character of Byrnes Downs and surrounding areas...and to actively encourage neighborliness and a greater sense of community among its residents." It publishes a newsletter, holds social events and actively seeks volunteers to join its many committees.
The West Ashley Greenway, a popular biking and walking path, runs through the neighborhood. A Starbucks, an Earth Fare grocery store, Holy Cow Yoga, Osaka Asian Bistro, a Charleston County Library branch and the Medical University of South Carolina are all within walking distance. Trendy Avondale is not far and is home to boutique retailers, fun eateries, elegant pubs, wine and cheese shops and more. Folly Beach and Sullivan's Island are just 10 to 12 miles away.
Byrnes Downs has some racial diversity, and politics lean to the right.
The area has a subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid with temperatures in the 80s and 90s, and winters are mild with temperatures in the 40s, 50s, 60s. On average, the city receives 46 inches of rain per year.
