Homey, Up and Coming Neighborhood of Division-Clinton in Southeastern Portland Boasts Ecelctic Housing and Some of the City's Best Restaurants

The name is not great, but the Division-Clinton neighborhood in southeastern Portland is an up and coming section of the city, home to a popular row of restaurants, independent retail shops, condos and single family homes. Technically part of the Hosford-Abernathy neighborhoood, Division-Clinton is dense and compact with a quirky, youthful vibe.

Most maps put the neighborhood from around 10th and 11th Avenues, running along the border with Ladd's Addition (a historic Portland neighborhood) through 20th and 26th Avenues. Some folks say Division-Clinton actually extends all the way to 39th Avenue.

Real estate ranges from newly renovated condos and sustainable new town homes to modest period bungalows and vintage four squares. New construction is often next door to homes from the 1940s and 1950s, creating an eclectic urban scene. Yards are on the small side with tall trees and thick bushes. Prices begin in the mid- to high-$200,000s and top out in the millions.

Neighborhood residents include young singles, middle age couples with teenagers, empty nesters and baby boomers. Political views lean very much to the left. Division-Clinton's median age is 34.

People choose to live here for the somewhat affordable real estate, homey ambiance, fun shops and outstanding selection of restaurants. In fact, this area of Portland is a foodie destination with something to satisfy any palate.

For example, the Victory Bar is known for its beer sausage spaetzle, while Reel M Inn has the city's best fried chicken. Vindalho boasts upscale Indian fare, while SubRosa is the go to place for Italian cuisine. Broder has little wooden tables and focuses on Swedish and Danish menus. Pok Pok is one of the best Thai eateries in the country. Division-Clinton is even home to a vegan ice cream shop and the original Stumptown coffee shop.

Wine bars and beer bars are in good supply. One well known bar is the Bula Kava House where customers enjoy a legal, mildly psychoactive Fijian root drink. Many bars and restaurants have lines out the door once evening arrives.

Beyond the lively restaurant and pub scene, Division-Clinton has art galleries, vintage clothiers, book stores, the slghtly odd Clinton Street Theater, organic groceries and more. A particular Division-Clinton highlight is the Division Street Fair held every August. Artisan booths, sidewalk shops, live music and a parade ensure that the event is always well attended.

Summer temperatures are in the 70s and 80s, and winter temperatures are in the 30s, 40s and 50s. On average, the area receives 43 inches of rain and three inches of snow per year. Skies are often overcast.
