Walkable Shore Acres is a Popular St. Petersburg Waterfront Neighborhood with a Wide Range of Home Prices

Shore Acres is on the northeastern edge of St. Petersburg, about four miles from downtown, and is bounded by Old Tampa Bay and Smacks Bayou to the east, west and south. The neighborhood has about 2,300 homes and is densely populated.

Originally just marshland dotted with pine trees and palmettos, Shore Acres was originally platted in the 1920s during the Florida land boom. Lots were first sold in the 1950s, and although most homes were built between 1970 and 1999, and neighborhood still has modest single level concrete block bungalows from the 1950s and 1960s. These tend to be toward the east end.

The west end is laced with canals that lead to open water and is packed with stylish condominiums and exquisite custom waterfront estates with boat docks and swimming pools. Mature palm trees and fruit frees adorn many a front yard.

Prices start in the high-$100,000s to low-$200,000s and reach into the millions.

Shore Acres is home to executives, professionals, families and boomers, all of whom appreciate its waterfront locale and quiet ambiance. The neighborhood is short on racial diversity, and politics lean to the right.

The Shore Acres Civic Association meets monthly to update residents on local happenings and issues and has an active Facebook page.

The neighborhood is walkable and has a small shopping center with a food market, a dry cleaners and a butcher. More shopping areas, including the Skyway Shopping Center and Gateway Mall, are just north of Shore Acres. Nearby 4th Street has eateries such as Ciccio's, Tour de Pizza, El Cap, Better Byrd and others. In the center of Shore Acres, the Shore Acres Recreation Center has a swimming pool, basketball courts and all sorts of classes.

Shore Acres is connected to tony Snell Isle and historic Northeast Park by bridges. Weeden Island State Preserve is to the north and to the east.

Thanks to its low-lying location, the neighborhood has been prone to flooding in the past. Since 1991, however, the city has spent $9.2 million on flood prevention in Shore Acres alone, raising several streets by six inches and building vaults that keep water from backing up in drainage pipes during high tides. As a result, flood claims have dropped significantly in recent years. Still, flood insurance is expensive and a cost to keep in mind if thinking of buying in Shore Acres.

This area has a humid subtropical climate. Summer temperatures are in the 80s and 90s, and winter temperatures are in the 60s and 70s. On average, the area receives 52 inches of rain per year.
