Charming Key West Neighborhood of The Meadows Boasts Traditional Island Architecture and is Home to Many Year Round Residents
Key West is part of the Florida Keys archipelago and is the state's southernmost point. Known for its tropical bohemian vibe, the town has a number of distinct neighborhoods. One of these is The Meadows, a charming part of the Historic District (Old Town) on the western half of the island.
The Meadows neighborhood is a square, about 24 blocks in size, and is bordered by White Street, Angel Street, Eisenhower Drive and Truman Avenue. Quiet and private with a good percentage of year-round residents, most of The Meadows' homes were built during the early-20th century Florida land boom. Traditional, colorful conch-style homes, wood frame shotgun homes and eyebrow homes (side-oriented, gable-roofed buildings) are tighly packed together along narrow, parallel one-way streets. Sizes range from about 600 square feet to more than 3,000 square feet with two to six bedrooms.
Many properties have been updated and boast vaulted ceilings, French doors, bamboo floors, dart molding and more. Some homes have been converted into condominiums with two to three units. All residences have colorful tropical landscaping, including palm trees, royal poinciana trees, mahogany trees and more. White picket fences are common.
Prices generally start in the $300,000s and top out in the millions.
Nearly 600 people live in The Meadows, and the neighborhood has some racial diversity. The median age is 40, and politics lean to the left. People enjoy living here because it is close to the center of Old Town and lively, touristy Duval Street but far enough away to feel like a world all its own.
The Meadows does not have any commercial or retail establishments except on it edges. For example, the Studios of Key West are in a historic building on White Street and has art galleries, art classes and more. Every third Thursday, residents come out for the "Walk on White Street" when many of the galleries stay open later in the evening.
This area has summer temperatures in the 80s and 90s, with winter temperatures in the 70s and 80s. On average, the area receives 44 inches of rain per year.
